There’s 8.5m reasons why no one wants him…

Montreal may have interest in Barzal. What you have to have for him?
Quality future pieces to build around and this years 1st unprotected. None of that overhyped prospect because he’s with the Habs (i.e. Nick Roberson).

Look at how many teams talk about goalie issues. Sorokin didn't have a very good season but you want to kick him to the moon? That just doesn't make sense right now. He's a goalie that can steal you games. I don't see you using that money on some big, young fish coming back.

Horvat just signed. He's not being traded. Barzal isn't being traded this offseason. You'll have to look at other pieces.

The first step should be to get rid of the scrubs. Not get rid of your best pieces to start a tear-down.
you are not wrong, but paradoxically, moving fringe is likely to only result in either comparable but slightly lesser fringe at the same price or slightly better fringe at cost to acquire, which may/may not be worth it.

But while this is not quite close to rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, there is still a bottom line here.

If you honestly think this core still has it, you can tweak and hope for the best another season or 2.

But if another year of the same but older is not likely gonna cut it, reality says big changes are needed or more of the same = more of the same.

How are you going to replace the scrubs with anything but scrubs? There's almost no cap space, and the major part of the salary has movement protection.

Deals can get done, but Isles are not in driver's seat commanding, unless a premium asset like dobson is on the table.

Teams will be making moves in the off season. We had 8 HC changes between game 1 to now. Can’t just have been the HC at fault. GM likely didn’t do enough to ice a better team. Isles are in a tough spot with so many of their roster into ufa years with trade protection in their contracts.

They haven’t used a first rounder on a prospect since 2019 and only have 2 seconds remaining from their 202X’s years in the organization. Are there any youngsters from within that can make the jump? Haven’t heard any ncaa free agent signings from them.

Team is in major need of a refresh in their lineup.

Maggio had a good shot out of camp to make it. Possibly can with a strong showing in September. Iskhakov would be another interesting one to look out for. As for NCAA signings: Marshall Warren, Cam Thiesing and Alex Jeffries. Daylan Kuefler made the jump from college to the AHL as well.
